Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content easy for AI assistants and search answer boxes to use when they answer a question. It overlaps heavily with SEO and GEO, and none of the three terms has an agreed definition. Nobody can promise that doing AEO gets your company named.

## Key points
- AEO means shaping your content so tools that give written answers can find it, understand it and use it.
- AEO and GEO are used almost interchangeably; the work behind both is the same, so do not spend time on the label.
- SEO aims at a position in a list of links; AEO aims at being named inside an answer, which you can only measure by asking many times.
- Start with the questions your buyers ask, and answer each one on your own site in the first sentences.
- No one outside the assistants knows exactly what decides who gets named, so treat every tactic as a test.

## What is answer engine optimization?

An answer engine is a tool that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot are examples. So are the answer boxes that Google and Bing show above their results for some searches.

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the work of shaping your content and your public footprint so those tools can find it, understand it and use it when they answer. It is a label, not a standard. No body defines it, and people use it in slightly different ways.

In this guide it means three things: pick the questions your buyers ask, answer each one clearly on your own site, and check whether assistants name you.

## Is AEO the same as GEO?

In practice, mostly yes. The term AEO is older. It was used for winning featured snippets and for voice assistants that read out one answer. GEO, short for generative engine optimization, came later and focuses on assistants that write their answers with a language model.

Both describe the same goal: being part of the answer rather than a link under it. Some writers use AEO for the broader idea and GEO for the chatbot case. Others do the reverse. If a vendor or article uses either term, ask what work it actually describes. A separate guide on this site covers GEO in depth, so this page stays on what makes AEO distinct.

## How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO aims to place a page high in a list of links. AEO aims to get your company named, or your page used, inside a written answer. The pages you write can overlap a lot, because both need content that is accurate, useful and easy for a machine to read.

The bigger difference is how you check results. A search ranking is a position you can look up. An assistant's answer changes from one ask to the next, so a single check tells you almost nothing.

## What does AEO work look like in practice?

Most of it is ordinary content work with a tighter focus. Behavior differs per assistant and changes over time, so treat this as a method to test, not a formula.

1. List the questions a buyer asks before choosing a company like yours, such as which tool fits a certain team size or which provider is best in a certain city.
2. Write one page per question on your own site. Put a direct answer in the first two or three sentences, then support it.
3. Use your own facts: what you offer, who it suits, what it does not do, and figures you can stand behind.
4. Make sure the page can be read by a crawler: plain text, no login wall, a clear title that matches the question.
5. Check what others say about you. Assistants with web search can draw on reviews and forums, such as Google reviews, Yelp, Trustpilot, G2, Capterra and Reddit. Fix what is wrong or out of date where you can.
6. Measure, change one thing, and measure again. Update the page on a regular schedule, because answers move.

## How do you measure AEO?

Ask the same buying question many times, across several assistants, and count how often you are named. Assistants rarely give the same list twice, so one screenshot shows luck, not a trend. Tracking the share of answers that name you, and which competitors appear beside you, is far more reliable.

Outnamed does this by asking each buying question thirty times across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity through their official programming interfaces with web search on. You can run a rough version yourself: ask ten times, note who is named each time, and repeat monthly. Results from a chat window may differ from results through an interface, so keep your method the same each time.

## Is AEO worth the effort?

Buyers are using assistants. In the G2 Buyer Behavior Report from June 2026, which surveyed more than 1,000 software buyers, 8 in 10 said they had used an AI chatbot to find recommendations in the last two years. The same report found that 37% say chatbots shape their shortlist most, level with review sites at 38%.

Volume is a separate question. Ahrefs reported on its own traffic over 30 days that visitors from AI search were 0.5% of traffic and 12.1% of sign-ups. That is one company's data, so it does not predict yours.

What nobody knows is how fast any single change will move your results, or whether it will at all. The assistants decide who gets named. AEO improves your odds of being usable as a source. It does not buy a mention.

**SEO and AEO compared**

| Question | SEO | AEO |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What does the reader see? | A list of links | A written answer that often names a few companies |
| What counts as a win? | A high position and clicks | Being named or cited in answers |
| How do you measure it? | Look up rankings and traffic | Ask many times and count how often you are named |
| How is the page built? | Around a keyword and its intent | Around one question, answered in the first sentences |
| What do both need? | Accurate, useful, crawlable pages | Accurate, useful, crawlable pages |

## Questions people also ask

### Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Search engines still send visitors, and the basics of clear, crawlable, useful pages help in both. Think of AEO as an added way to check and shape how your content is used when someone asks a question instead of searching for a keyword.

### Do I need a separate website for AEO?

No. The work happens on your existing site, in pages that each answer one buying question. What you may need is new pages, and corrections to old ones that are vague or outdated.

### Does structured data or schema markup help with AEO?

It is not publicly confirmed how, or whether, each assistant uses it. Markup can help search engines understand a page, so it does no harm when it is accurate. Do not rely on it in place of clear answers in the visible text.

### How long does AEO take to show results?

Nobody can say. Assistants differ, and their behavior changes over time. Measure a starting point first, then compare month by month, and judge by the trend across many repeated asks.

### How many questions should I start with?

Start with five to ten of the questions closest to a purchase. Fewer lets you do each one properly and measure it. Add more once you see which pages hold up.

### Can a small local business do AEO?

Yes. Local owners can answer questions such as which provider fits a certain need in their city, keep their details accurate, and encourage honest reviews on Google reviews and Yelp. Outnamed offers a free scan that shows what customers say about you in public reviews, how you compare with competitors and what to fix first.
