SEO for ChatGPT: what is different from SEO for Google?

By Outnamed · Updated

SEO for ChatGPT means making your company easy for an AI assistant to find, understand and name when someone asks for a recommendation. Much of the groundwork matches Google SEO: clear pages, accurate facts, a site that can be crawled. The difference is that the result is a written answer, not a ranked list, and nobody can promise you will be named.

Key points

What does SEO for ChatGPT mean?

SEO for ChatGPT is the work of raising the chance that ChatGPT names your company when a buyer asks it for a recommendation. You will also see it called AI search optimization or generative engine optimization. These are informal labels, not standards.

ChatGPT builds answers from what it learned in training and, when web search is on, from pages it finds at that moment. OpenAI does not publish how it picks those pages or the companies it names. So anyone who hands you a list of ranking factors for ChatGPT is guessing.

It is still worth your attention. G2's Buyer Behavior Report, June 2026 (1,000+ software buyers), found that 8 in 10 software buyers used an AI chatbot to find recommendations in the last two years. In the same G2 report, 37% say chatbots shape their shortlist most, level with review sites at 38%.

How is SEO for ChatGPT different from SEO for Google?

Google shows a list of links, and you can look up your position for a given search. ChatGPT writes a short answer, often naming a handful of companies, and the same question can produce a different answer the next time. There is no fixed position to check.

The goal shifts too. In Google you want the click. In an assistant you want to be named in the answer, and perhaps cited as a source, before the buyer ever visits your site. The table sets the two side by side.

What stays the same in SEO for ChatGPT?

A lot of the groundwork carries over. These are good habits, not proven ranking factors for any assistant.

What can you do about it this month?

Start with the questions, not the keywords. Buyers ask assistants full sentences, such as which tool suits a team of ten, so work from those.

  1. Write down 10 to 20 questions a buyer would ask when choosing a company like yours, in plain words.
  2. Ask each question in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and note who is named and which sources are shown.
  3. Write one page on your own site per question. Answer it in the first sentence, then back it up with your own facts, figures and limits.
  4. Check that your site does not block crawlers by mistake. OpenAI publishes the names of its crawlers, so you can look for them in your robots.txt file. Whether to allow them is your decision.
  5. Read your public reviews and community threads. If the same complaint or the same gap keeps appearing, fix it or answer it on your site.
  6. Put a date in your calendar to review each page every month and correct anything that has changed.

How do you measure SEO for ChatGPT when answers keep changing?

One screenshot proves nothing, because assistants rarely give the same list twice. The workable method is to ask the same question many times and count how often you are named. Example with made-up numbers: if Your company appears in 6 of 30 answers and Competitor B in 15, you have a share you can track from month to month.

Outnamed does this by asking each buying question thirty times across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, through their official programming interfaces with web search switched on. You can run a smaller version by hand with a spreadsheet, though it takes time.

Also look at what the visits are worth, not only how many there are. Ahrefs reported that, on its own traffic over 30 days, visitors from AI search were 0.5% of traffic and 12.1% of sign-ups. That is one company's site, so do not assume it holds for yours. It does show why traffic counts alone can miss the effect.

What does nobody know yet?

Plenty. Each assistant works differently, and they change over time, often without notice. Treat any firm claim in this area with caution, including the ones on this page.

Questions people also ask

Is SEO for ChatGPT the same as generative engine optimization?

Mostly, yes. Generative engine optimization is a broader label for the same idea across all AI assistants, while SEO for ChatGPT names one of them. Neither term has an official definition, so check what a person means before you compare advice.

Do I still need Google SEO?

Yes. Google remains a place where buyers look, and many of the same basics help both: crawlable pages, accurate facts and clear answers. Doing the work for assistants does not replace it.

How long until ChatGPT names my company?

Nobody knows, and anyone who gives you a date is guessing. ChatGPT may never name you for a given question, however good your pages are. What you can do is publish useful pages and measure over time whether the count moves.

Does the advice work for Claude, Gemini and Perplexity too?

The basics carry over, but each assistant behaves differently and changes over time. That is why it makes sense to ask the same questions in all of them and compare, instead of assuming that what works in one works in the rest.

Does this matter for a local business?

It can. Reviews on Google reviews and Yelp are public, and assistants may draw on them when they answer. Keep your details accurate, answer common customer questions on your own site, and ask a few local questions in each assistant to see what comes back.

Can I do this without paying for a tool?

Yes. You can list your buying questions, ask them in each assistant many times, record who is named, and write answer pages yourself. A service such as Outnamed automates the repeated asking and the page writing, but the method is the same.
